Die Hard

Today we will be screening Die Hard to induct our week of Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy. Please read this article by Robynn Stilwell (available through JSTOR) and pay attention to how different tropes from classical music add to or ironize elements of the film.

As you may know, Die Hard established a specific genre of action film where a seemingly normal looking action-hero (as opposed to someone with a body-builder’s physique) had to do extraordinary things to save the day. Many films that followed it placed similar heroes (most often as police officers) going against the rules or the odds to make to the end of the day. These were often dubbed as “Die Hard in/on a ___” I look forward to your comments when we meet again!
