Bollywood Sound

Here is a link to this week’s reading. It was published in Global Soundtracks (Middletown: Wesleyan University Press), a recent collection of essays edited by Mark Slobin on the use of world music in film. For those of you working through issues of exoticism for your final term paper, you may want to consult it for your bibliography.

This week we will be looking at the more recent trends in Hindi language film soundtracks, especially those with music by A.R. Rahman. Lagaan is an especially good example of how bollywood has responded to general trends in musical theater in the United States. I’m looking forward to our discussion this Wednesday!
